Nangate MegaLibrary™ is a family of next-generation digital cell libraries that improves IC design implementation for commonly used leading-edge nanometer foundry processes. When introduced into a customer’s design flow, a MegaLibrary provides many of the benefits of full-custom design by providing access to a very large selection of fine-grained cell variants.
The MegaLibrary is deployed through the Nangate Design Optimizer™ in conjunction with industry-standard logical and physical implementation flows. The MegaLibrary and Design Optimizer integrate non-disruptively into existing tool flows, enabling fabless semiconductor companies to reap the benefits of design-specific cell libraries, without the need to create new libraries or modify existing libraries.
The Nangate Design Optimizer performs the following functions:
analyzes the design to select a subset of MegaLibrary cells that will give the most benefits
manages the subsets of cells exported to existing implementation tools
controls application of the extended library sets within these tools
Although other vendors’ tools support libraries containing only 500 to 1000 cells, the Nangate Design Optimizer easily copes with orders of magnitude more cells contained in a MegaLibrary. It selects subsets of MegaLibrary cells to achieve your design goals, and introduces only those selected cells to the tool flow.
Using a subset of the MegaLibrary, you can derive all the benefits of using a design-specific library, without the effort of creating or customizing cells. Using a MegaLibrary leads to improvements in performance that are simply not achievable with a generic cell library.
With ever-increasing demands for lower cost, faster and lower power devices, the MegaLibrary and Design Optimizer combination provide a scalable route to meeting performance challenges and achieving time-to-market expectations.
Improves timing between 10% and 50%
Reduces power by up to 35%
Reduces area by up to 30%
Features
MegaLibrary is a very rich, pre-qualified cell library containing orders of magnitude more cells than traditional generic cell libraries
MegaLibrary contains compatible, complementary extensions to foundry-supplied cell libraries
MegaLibrary cells are fully characterized and layout compatible with foundry-supplied cell libraries
“Tool and flow agnostic” – non-disruptive integration with industry-standard logical and physical design flows
Benefits
Application of subsets of the MegaLibrary provides all of the benefits of an application-specific library, with much better performance than ICs made from generic cell libraries
Improves time-to-performance – provides full-custom performance levels in a classical standard cell-flow timeframe
Ideal for core hardening, with healthy gains already achieved in major process families
Improves timing from 10% to 50% depending on design style. Typical timing gains in the order of 15%, even for already highly optimized designs.
Reduces static and dynamic power by up to 35%
Reduces area by up to 30% under fixed timing constraints

MegaLibrary contents:
1. Basic combinational cells:
Normal functional cells
Timing and power variants:
Fine-grained drive strengths
Skew (beta-ratio) variants
Interstage gain variant families
Multiple Vt options for optimal leakage
Long-gate power-saving variants
All created as footprint-compatible variants of base cells.
2. Extended function sets (to improve performance and reduce area):
Complex gates
Combined gates
All provided in a fine-grained progression of drive strengths.
(For detailed specifications, refer to literature on each MegaLibrary version.)
Library size:
A MegaLibrary typically contains between 10,000 and 50,000 cells, depending on process node and library type.
Validation:
All MegaLibrary cells are:
Fully DRC and functionality verified
Fully optimized for maximum speed, minimum power and minimum area
Fully NLDM/CCS/ECSM characterized and correlated to the foundry base library standard
Special PVT characterization:
If special, non-standard PVT points are required, Nangate can perform characterization as a separate service.
A Nangate MegaLibrary contains footprint-compatible skew and drive-strength variant cells, suitable for post-route leakage power reduction.
